Justin Girod-Chantrans (1750-1841) was a French phycologist. Together with Vaucher he was the founding father of French phycology. The fine plates are engraved by Sellier. At the end of the work a 4 page description of the book by Ventenat is added in which he praises the plates as follow": 'Le C. Girod-Chantrans a joint à ses descriptions de très bonnes figures qui représentent les substances qu'il a examinées, d'abord telles qu'elles se montrent à la vue simple, et en suite dans leurs détails microscopiques les plus remarquables'. The following inscription on the title: 'ex museo Doctoris Joannis Maria Leforto medici parisiensis'.
