"John Edwards was an engraver and printer and ... famous English artists to specialize in the genre of flower painting. From the very beginning of his career he devoted himself to floral and ornamental subjects.... Thus John Edwards depicted the natural world from the perspective of the artist, revelling in its infinite variety of forms and colours, in a vision of Neoclassical elegance with a lingering trace of the Rococo" (Tomasi. An Oak Spring Flora p. 246). Edwards not only made the drawings for this work, but also etched and engraved the majority of the plates.
