First edition, Stafleu's second issue. A beautifully bound copy of this important flora of North-West Africa, illustrated by the best artists of the period. 92 of the illustrations are after P.-J. Redouté, 61 after his younger brother H.-J. Redouté, the remainder after Maréchal, Fossier and Martin. The described plant species were collected by the author during a journey in Algeria and Tunesia during the years 1783-1785. The herbarium of 1480 specimens was left to the 'Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle', Paris and is now kept as an 'Herbier Historique'. "The work comprises a botanical study of about three hundred species of plants that Desfontaines had collected... between August 1783 and November 1785" (A Cat. of Redoutéana p. 40). There are several variant titles pages of the books as well as probably variant issues. The plates are numbered 1-261 and 2 bis plates. An uncut copy with some scattered spotting.
