The 40 plain plates were never issued coloured. "The Welshman, John Gwyn Jeffreys (1809-1885), author of the British Conchology and for long a leading authority on eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean molluscs, had a remarkably complete collection of shells from British and adjacent seas" (Dance. Shell collecting, p. 217). The first volume is a reissue of the 1862 edition.
