A book on amber, published by Justus Fidus Klobius of Wittenberg
Thorndike VIII, p. 18: "A book on amber, published by Justus Fidus Klobius of Wittenberg in 1660, examined eighteen opinions as to its origin and preferred the view that it was the dung of a bird native to Madagascar, the Maldives and East Indies, or possibly the excrement of a certain kind of whale. A contemporary reviewer added evidence from Purchas that spermaceti had been found in the head and ambergris in the entrails of the whale Trompa, when one was dissected". Most probably the second edition. Very scarce work on ambergris, a secretion of the sperm-whale and a few other mammals, which is well-known in perfumery. Also treated is its medical and culinary use, as well as related substances as amber, musk, and Chinese bird's nests. One very attractively engraved plate shows the winning of amber by means of collecting bird dung. The text partly in German. One plate with tiny marginal tear.
