Augsburg und Ulm, gedruckt bey Christian Ulrich Wagner, 1731-1735. 4 volumes. Folio (385 x 245mm). Leaves (27), pp. 1-276; Leaves (4), pp. 277-676; Leaves (4), pp. 1-738; Leaves (4), pp. 739-1426, with 2 mezzotint engraved portraits of Scheuchzer and Pfeffel, engraved frontispiece and 760 engraved plates on 758 leaves. The rainbow plate partly coloured as is correct. Contemporary vellum, spines with gilt lettering.

First edition. A very fine copy with the plates in excellent impressions of Scheuchzer's 'magnum opus', a detailed elucidation of events in the Bible in terms of physics, medicine and natural history. "The 'Physica Sacra' functioned as part library and part printed cabinet of curiosity. Through textual synthesis of hundreds of scientific, historical, and technological studies applied to specific bible verses, Scheuchzer harmonized Bible stories with contemporary debates about zoology, botany, geography, mathematics, astronomy, and biology. Scheuchzer's analysis of Bible verses included dramatic engravings of landscapes, fossils, exploded object views, and detailed architectural schematics, all with the express purpose of deciphering the mysteries and miracles of the Old and New Testaments. Descriptive borders with dissected flora and fauna, skeletons, tools, coins, and cameos surround the principle explanatory images. Many of the elaborate border images encroach on the principle frame, creating an intimate and immediate connection between the explanatory text, narrative scene, object, and bible verse; a space devoid of division between the natural, artificial, and divine" (S. Stillo. Information Networks in Johann Jakob Scheuchzer's Physica Sacra). "In Scheuchzer's gigantic work, 'Physica sacra', the Baroque attains, philosophically as well as artistically, its high point and its conclusion. It is the last of those elegant works which do not really contain illustrations to the text but which are, in effect, composed of splendid plates with a text to accompany them. The best engravers of the time took part? and made the whole splendor of Baroque chalcography appear once more"(Faber du Faur p. 472). The plates were designed by Johann Melchior Füssli, famous Swiss artist and the thematic borders by J.D. Pfeffel. 26 engravers were involved mostly from Augsburg or Nürnberg. 23 plates in the 4th volume show snakes only. Johann Jakob Scheuchzer (Zürich 1672-1733) was a famous Swiss scientist and is considered the founder of paleobotany and his "Herbarium diluvianum' remained the standard work through the nineteenth century. Among a great number of publications his 'Natur-historie des Schweizerlandes, Helvetiae stoicheiographia' and 'Homo diluvii testis' are best known. Nissen ZBI, 3661. Also see U.B. Leu (editor). CLUSIUS, C. - Exoticorum libri decem: quibus animalium, plantarum, aromatum, aliorumque peregrinorum fructuum historiae describuntur: Item Petri Bellonii Observationes... http://www.antiquariaatjunk.com/item.php?item=9934&s_currency= CLUSIUS, C.

Exoticorum libri decem: quibus animalium, plantarum, aromatum, aliorumque peregrinorum fructuum historiae describuntur: Item Petri Bellonii Observationes...

Leiden, Officina Pantiniana, Franciscus Raphelingius the younger, 1605. Folio (340 x 210mm). pp. (xvi), 378, (10); 52; (28); (xii), 242, (2), with engraved title, two woodcut maps of the Hellespont and Alexandria, and 275 woodcuts in the text (96 non-botanical). Contemporary richly gilt calf with a large monogram within a lozense stamped gilt border on both covers, spine in 8 compartments with gilt lettered label.

First edition of sequel to the author's 'Rariorum plantarum historia', 1601, containing further works not published in the former, and mostly devoted to exotic plants and animals. The first six books, Libri I-VI, are new writings by Clusius, devoted to new species of plants, animals, and natural history from the new World, Southeast Asia, Africa, etc. This work is important for the number of new descriptions of non-European plants (and some animals) it contains, among which is the first published record and illustration of a South African plant. 'It is of particular importance to us in containing an illustration of a dried inflorescence of 'Protea neriifolia'. Clusius provided a full description of the specimen, which he referred to as an 'elegant thistle' (Carduus), and reported that it was collected at Antongil Bay on the north-east coast of Madagascar during a Dutch trading expedition to Java in 1597. The locality recorded was clearly incorrect and there can be no doubt that the specimen must have been picked up during a call for fresh water somewhere along the Cape coast. It has the distinction of being the first known botanical object to have reached Europe from South Africa' (Todd and Gunn, Botanical exploration of South Africa, p. 13). There is an extensive account of exotic seeds sent to him by various explorers. Libri VII-X comprise Clusius' translations, with commentary, of da Orta, Acosta, and Monardes. This is followed by further works by Monardes translated by Clusius, entitled 'Libri tres, magna medicina secreta et varia experimenta continentes' (on the bezoar stone, iron, snow, etc), 'Libellus de rosa' and 'Dissertatiuncula de citriis'. This is followed by the 'Altera appendix', intended as a supplement to the 'Rariorum plantarum historiae', and finally Clusius' translations of and commentaries on Belon, the ' Plurimarum singularium & memorabilium rerum in Graecia, Asia, Aegypto, Iudaea, Arabia, aliisque exteris provinciis an ipso conspectarum observationes' and the 'De neglecta plantarum libellus'. There are various issues of the different sections of the book. This copy has the first state of the prelims, without the two leaves of verses (printed 1606-7) added later to a few copies. The 'Altera appendix' is in the final state, with the additional gathering ***4, containing flowering dates to 1605. Provenance: Inscription of Petri Uffenbachii on engraved title. Peter Uffenbach 1566-1633 was a famous physician of Frankfurt and author of several medical works and editor of a new edition of Lonicer's 'Kräuterbuch'. Bookplate of Alfred Schmid on free endpaper. BUFFON, (G.L.L.) & LACEPEDE, (B.G.E.). - Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière, avec la description du Cabinet du Roy . http://www.antiquariaatjunk.com/item.php?item=9823&s_currency= BUFFON, (G.L.L.) & LACEPEDE, (B.G.E.).

Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière, avec la description du Cabinet du Roy .

Paris, l' Imprimerie Royale, Hôtel de Thou, Plassan, 1749-1804. 44 volumes. 4to (245 x 192mm). With1 engraved portrait of Buffon, 4 folded tables, 12 engraved maps and 1261 engraved plates. Contemporary almost uniform calf, richly gilt decorated spines with red and green gilt lettered labels.

A fine and attractively bound set of the rare first edition including the posthumously published volumes written by Lacépède on fishes, amphibians, snakes and whales. A well preserved set, of this great classic on natural history, dealing almost exclusively with zoology. Buffon's work enjoyed such a popularity that numerous editions and continuations were published throughout the 18th and 19th century. These, however, should not be confused with the above sumptuously printed 'Imprimerie Royale' edition. All plates are engraved after drawings by De Sève, the famous French landscape painter. The animals are depicted in their natural habitat, together with charming landscapes, villages, mountains etc. These elaborately drawn plates, full of elegance, became very popular and were frequently imitated. The work is composed as follows: Histoire Naturelle ... 15 volumes; Suppléments 7 volumes; Minéraux 5 volumes; Oiseaux 9 volumes; Quadrupèdes ovipares et des serpens 2 volumes; Poissons 5 volumes; Cétacées 1 volume. "... he opens his great work with an essay called 'Théorie de la Terre', in which for the first time he outlines a satisfactory account of the history of our globe and its development as a fitting home for living things... This rejection of a rigid system of classification, to which most biologists of his time adhered, and Buffon's belief in the mutability of species, implied clearly some preparation for the thoughts of Darwin... Nevertheless he was the first to present the universe as one complete whole and to find no phenomenon calling for any but a purely scientific explanation" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 198). The 5 volumes on fishes by Lacépède have almost identical but slightly different bindings, the final volume on whales 'Cétacées' also by Lacépède is in a contemporary but different full calf binding, both these works were published after the French Revolution. The section on fishes and whales form the final 6 volumes (vol. 39-44) of the 'Histoire Naturelle?' Provenance: Armorial bookplates of Bibliothèque de M. Le Cte Frédéric de Pourtales with motto 'Quid non dilectis' (the last 6 volumes, published after the revolution, are without bookplate. PMM 198; Sparrow, Milestones of Science 32; Nissen ZBI, 672; Dibner, Heralds 193.

An attractive uniformly bound copy of the finest natural history encyclopaedia ever made for children. The work was published in 237 parts over a long period, for this reason complete copies are very rare, especially the last published volume. Friederich Bertuch 1747-1822 was one of the most important publishers of the period, in 1790 he established the famous 'Landes Industrie Comptoirs', publishing in 1791 Goethe's work on Optics as well as many other works of importance. "Bertuch's picture-book was the crest of the wave of educational children's books on science which can be traced back to the 'Orbis pictus' of Comenius, first published in 1658. The plates were produced by Ludwig Ebner, C. Ermer, Theodor Götz, Ludwig Hess, Conrad Horney, J.B. Hoessel, C. and G. Johann Friedrich Gmelin who, making free use of the many non-Linnaean works of the day, revised Linnaeus's 'Systema Naturae', beginning in 1788. By introducing new and acceptable binominals he was able to obtain authorship of numerous species, and many New Zealand molluscs and fish collected on Cook's voyage bear his names...This explains why so many New Zealand birds discovered in those days have Gmelin's name as author: the Shining Cuckoo, the Tui, Morepok, South Island Kaka - the list is long" (Andrews, The Southern Ark pp. 55 & 61). Opere fisico-mediche stampate e manoscritte... raccolte da Antonio suo Figliuolo, corredate d'una Prefazione...

Venezia, S. Coleti, 1733. 3 volumes. Folio (355 x 225mm). pp. (2), lxxxii, 469; (4), 551; (4), 676,with 92 engraved plates, 3 engraved title-vignettes, 2 engraved plates of portraits one of Vallisnieri and the other one of Contessa Celia Grilla-Borromea, to whom one of the works is dedicated and some engravings in the text. Contemporary half calf, a bit rubbed (spines a bit worn).

First edition of Vallisnieri's collected works. It was edited by his son Antonio and contains all his famous contributions on zoology, entomology, medicine, geology and natural history. Antonio Vallisnieri (1666-1730) was a pupil of Malpighi at Bologna. "In comparison with contemporary scientific thought, Vallisnieri's work has a very modern character - as Redi had already done - the way opened by Galileo (whom he quotes only twice) and Francis Bacon (whom he also quotes) he rejected Scholastic knowledge and trusted solely in direct observation and in experiment... Vallisnieri was thus one of the first modern naturalist to have a clear awareness of the character of scientific phenomena" (DSB). Vallisinieri did a.o. extensive research on the reproductive system of men and animals, he complemented to Redi's demonstration of the fallacy of the hypothesis of spontaneous generation and was a forerunner of evolutionary concepts. 50 Jahre Antiquar. Ein nachgelassenes Manuskript herausgegeben von A.C. Klooster und W. Weisbach.

's Gravenhage, Uitgeverij Dr. W. Junk, 1949. 8vo (241 x 160mm). pp. (8), 431, with a frontispiece portrait of Wilhelm Junk. Publisher's cloth.

An interesting work written by the founding father of our company. It is since long out of print and the present copy is probably a later issue. The work descibes the rarity of many natural history books, the colouring, the defects, the too small editions, how to run an antiquarian business, the riscs and mistakes, the economic ups and downs and many more aspects.
