4to (270 x 210mm). With 544 fine engraved plates by the author, printed in colours with hand-finishing. Contemporary dark blue calf, richly gilt ornamented spines with gilt lettering.

The rare 4to issue printed on 'Velin'. The ordinary issue in 8vo was printed on wove paper. "It wasplanned to publish 800 plates but as far as we know the regular publication was terminated with plate 544" (Stafleu & Cowan 3311). Three issues appeared of the work one in 8vo, the here offered one in 4to, and 12 copies were issued in folio. The work was published at his own expense, as were his other works. He hoped thereby to earn a comfortable living, but this did not happen and despite the fact that his writings were well received, he lived close to poverty for most of his life. Jean Henri Jaume Saint Hilaire (1772-1845) was a French botanist and botanical artist. "It is not until the beginning of the nineteenth century that precise scientific drawing commences to characterize French flower plates but with the transition the French artists such as Jaume St. Hilaire, Bessa, Turpin and Redouté rose almost immediately to world pre-eminence. These names are collector's high points" (Dunthorne p. 4). Blunt considers Jaume Saint-Hilaire a distinguished botanist and praises his 'Plantes de France' with its 1000 pleasant little stipple plates. Jaume Saint-Hilaire studied flower painting under van Spaendonck in Paris, and may have worked with Pierre Joseph Redouté, the master artist who tutored more than a generation of flora painters. Some occasional discoloration around subjects to a small number of plates especially in the second volume. Dunthorne 160; Stafleu & Cowan 3311.

GODART, J.B. & DUPONCHEL, P.A.J. - Histoire naturelle des Lépidoptères ou Papillons de France. http://www.antiquariaatjunk.com/item.php?item=10049&s_currency= GODART, J.B. & DUPONCHEL, P.A.J.

Paris, Crevot/Méquignon-Marvis Fils, 1821-1842. 11 volumes & 4 supplements (bound in 17). 8vo (215 x 130mm). With 546 (545 hand-coloured) engraved plates (and:) DUPONCHEL, P.-A.-J. Paris, Méquignon-Marvis, 1844. 8vo. pp. xxx, (2), 523, (1) (and:) DUPONCHEL, P.-A.J. & GUENEE. Paris, Méquignon-Marvis, 1832. 2 volumes. With 91 of (93) hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary uniform half black cloth, gilt lettered spines, marbled sides (a few hinges splitting but firm).

A fine uniformly bound copy of the first edition. Jean Baptiste Godart (1775-1825) published the first 5 volumes of this famous work, which was continued after his death by his friend Duponchel. Very rare set of one of the finest illustrated French works on Lepidoptera. The plates (after drawings by Baron, Delarue, Duménil, Linden, Vaillant, and Vauthier) are beautifully handcoloured. It is rare to find a set with the mostly lacking supplement by Duponchel and Guenée on the caterpillars of France. For this work Duponchel was assisted by Achille Guénée (1809-1880) and according to Lhoste 'Guénée se classe parmi les plus grands entomologistes français'. The caterpillars are shown together with their feeding plants. The supplement on caterpillars lacks 2 plates. Apart from some occasional foxing a fine set. Provenance: Armorial bookplate of 'Bibliothèque de Bois-Boudran', library of Comte Greffulhe. Hagen 288; Horn & Schenkling 5587, 5589 & 5596; Nissen ZBI, 1598, 1212.

SÉJOURNÉ, A. - Champignons des environs de Blois. http://www.antiquariaatjunk.com/item.php?item=9930&s_currency= SÉJOURNÉ, A.

Champignons des environs de Blois.

Blois circa 1880. 2 volumes. Folio (360 x 270mm). A collection of 161 very fine watercolours of mushrooms of the Blois area (Loire valley). Loose in 2 contemporary red half calf bindings, spines with gilt lines and the following lettering Champignons *1* A. Séjourné and Champignons *2* A. Séjourné.

A unique and well preserved collection of highly finished watercolours of the fungi of the Loire valley and of great scientific interest. The first album contains 100 highly finished drawings. At the head of each drawing (with the exception of 11 drawings) the following is written in pen 'Champignons des environs de Blois A. Séjourné' and at the foot of the drawing the Latin name is mentioned as well as the exact location, for example 'Forêt de Blois' or 'Sous les peuplier des Ponts Chartrains comestible'. Of the other 11 drawings 4 have no text, the others have the text written in pencil. The second volume contains 61 watercolours as well as one photo. 10 of these have no text. The quality of the drawings is exceptionally fine and scientifically accurate. Abbé A. Séjourné was born at Herbault 1843 and died 1900 at Blois. E. Boudier the famous French mycologist wrote the following necrology about him in the Bull. de la Societé Botanique de France in 1900. The plates are numbered 1 to 162 at the right upper corner.

Folio (345 x 255mm). With 1 colour-printed frontispiece and 602 colour-printed engraved plates, 4 engraved plates (2 plates of 'Observations microscopiques' of which 1 coloured and 2 plates 'Tableaux des Genres'), and 12 engraved tables 'années 1-12'. Contemporary pink boards.

An uncut copy. As usual it does not contain the second volume of the text of the 'Histoire des Champignons de la France'. The second part of this volume was published posthumously by Ventenant in 1812 and was destroyed by fire soon after printing and is found in only a few copies. The present work is one of the most interesting colour-printed natural history works. The fine delicate plates are of a great scientific exactness, all by Bulliard who drew, engraved, and printed the plates himself. The colour-printing without retouching by hand, is in the Le Blon-Gauthier method, using a separate plate for each colour. A technique rarely employed for botanical books. "Bulliard was his own printer. He mixed colored inks with great delicacy and, in general, accuracy, and inked his tint plates with minute attention to detail. Some of his tintings seems to have relied on the additional effect of a rich ink tone to give greater local 'solidity'. The three tint plates were overprinted on the 'key' plate with hair's-breadth accuracy, and evidence of his method of obtaining such precise positioning, or register, can be seen in pin holes at upper right and lower left corners of the line frame. The final effect is delicate, pleasing and botanically accurate, and the whole collection has a unique quietly individual flavor. The degree of craftmanship necessary to create these prints is only apparent when one studies them in close detail' (Printing in the service of Botany, 39). The 'Herbier de la France' is composed as follows: Herbier de la France. Première division: Histoire des plantes vénéneuses et suspectes de la France. Paris 1784. pp. (4), x, 177, (1). Herbier de la France seconde division: Histoire des champignons de France, Tome premier. Paris 1791. pp. (2), xvi, 368, ix. Our copy contains plates 601 and 602 (loosely inserted at the end), missing in most copies. Pritzel mentions 600 as a total and says: 'les planches 601 et 602 manquent habituellement' and according to Dr W. Junk they might have been destroyed during the revolution. Raspail in 1840 republished these 2 plates. Of the 600 plates 382 show fungi. Provenance: Bookplate of Dr. J.R. Chapuis. A fine, very large, large uncut copy. The folio edition of probably the most attractive work published on volcanology. "Meanwhile, Faujas had been exploring the hilly districts of Vivarais and Velay in the east-central France and found that the basalt there was also volcanic ... he embodied them in 1778 in a great folio work on the ancient volcanoes of Vivarais and Velay (accounts of other researches were included). The work established once and for all that basalt, a rock important scientifically because of its distinctive characteristics, its widespread occurence, and the manner of its association with other kinds of rocks, was the product of volcanic action" (D.S.B. The work is dedicated to the Italian botanist Philippe Parlatore. The present copy is an interesting association copy as it was presented by Parlatore to lady Berta Sommier. The botanical sections of 'Le Panier de fruits' are well informed and mention contemporary research, while the literary accompaniments range from a poem based on Jauffret's prose to a translation of a moral tale by Maria Edgeworth". A fine uncut copy. Barbier III, 768; Raphael, An Oak Spring Pomona, 45.

Bucquoy and G.F. Dollfus (he) wrote a large work on the marine molluscs of the Roussillon, South France, generally recognised as the best available account of western Mediterranean molluscs' (Dance p. 165).
