SCHMIDEL, C.C.
Icones plantarum et analyses partium aeri incisae atque vivis coloribus indicibus nominum necessariis figuram explicationibus et brevibus animadversionibus.
Erlangen, Palm, 1793-1797. 3 parts (bound in 1 volume). Folio (415 x 255mm). pp. (2), 94; (2), 95-197, (3); (4), 199-280, with 75 fine hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, richly gilt ornamented spine with gilt lettering.

First edition containing all three 'Manipuli'. The plates are engraved by Bischoff, Knorr and Keller after drawings by the author, N. Gabler, J.C. Keller and V. Bischoff. They contain some excellent representations of magnified anatomical detail; this was the period when innovations in the fields of microscopy and taxonomy focused attention on the dissection of plant parts for identification purpose during the latter part of the eighteenth century. Casimir Schmidel is best known for his studies of the morphology of the cryptogams and for his editing of Konrad Gesner's posthumous botanical publications. A fine copy of this rare work, being one of the "important botanical books that were produced on the Continent during the latter part of the eighteenth century" (Blunt, pp. 166-167). Great Flower Books, p. 75; Hunt 576; Nissen BBI, 1780; Stafleu & Cowan 10854.
