the first to observe and elucidate the process of photosynthesis

A very nice copy of the first edition of Ingen-Housz famous work on photosynthesis. "Description of photosynthesis, the formation of compounds in plants exposed to light" (Horblit 55). "Ingen-Housz became the first to observe and elucidate the process of photosynthesis and plant respiration. In his 'Experiments upon vegetables', Ingen-Housz established that only the green parts of a plant give off the 'restoring'gas (oxygen), and only when exposed to visible sunlight" (Norman 1141).
