Amsterdam, Erven van F. Houttuyn, 1771. 8vo (205 x 120mm). pp. (6), 630, (10), with 11 folded engraved plates. Recent half cloth, marbled sides.

The complete shell section of Houttuyn's well known work, based on Linnaeus's 'Systema naturae'. It is often cited under Linnaeus, although it is more a compilation than a translation and influenced largely many similar works in the vernacular in other countries. "Martin Houttuyn, a doctor of Amsterdam, had a large shell collection which was said to contain numerous rare species" (Dance, P. A history of Shell collection p. 57).
